How to block Instagram on iPhone

Block Instagram on iPhone with Screen Time, or give Instagram its own limit in Warden: a daily allowance, a night schedule or Lockdown. You can keep the app installed.

Set a limit in Apple Screen Time

The settings depend on your iOS version. These steps are for your own iPhone; use Apple’s family setup when managing a child’s device.

iOS 27: Time Allowances

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time > Time Allowances. Turn on App & Website Activity if asked.

Screen Time settings with Time Allowances outlined
  2. Set the daily total, then open the relevant category and set its allowance. Use Manage Categories to add a category.

Time Allowances with the slider for All apps open
  3. Check which apps are included. A category allowance is shared across its apps, not granted separately to each one.

Manage Categories with the add button outlined

For specific hours, use Screen Time Schedule. Keep essential apps and contacts in Always Allowed.

iOS 26: App Limits

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, then tap Add Limit.
  2. Expand a category to select an individual app, or select the category to limit it as a group.
  3. Tap Next, choose the time, and use Customize Days for different daily limits. Confirm with the Done button.

When several apps share one limit, they share the time too. Check how your setup grants extra time before relying on the block.

Why iOS 27 does not limit Instagram on its own

Apple’s iOS 27 guide describes Time Allowances for categories such as Social Media, plus a daily total for the whole device. It does not describe an allowance for a single app, so Instagram shares its minutes with the other apps in its category. Time in TikTok or Facebook can use up the allowance you meant for Instagram.

On iOS 26, App Limits can still select Instagram on its own. On iOS 27, use a rule that selects the app itself. In Warden, each app gets its own daily limit, so Instagram can have 30 minutes while YouTube keeps an hour.

Block Instagram at night

If the problem is late scrolling, a schedule fits better than a daily limit. A daily limit can be used up by lunch, or still have minutes left at midnight. A schedule from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM closes Instagram at the same time every night, whatever you used during the day.

If you keep ending the block early, set the schedule to Lockdown. While it is active there is no unlock button and the rule cannot be edited, so the decision you made at 6 PM holds at 11 PM.

Reels, messages and instagram.com

An app rule blocks Instagram as a whole. Reels, Stories and direct messages close together. App blockers built on Apple’s Screen Time system, Warden included, cannot keep messages open while blocking only Reels. If you need messages, leave a short window outside the block for them.

Blocking the app does not block the website. If you would open instagram.com in Safari instead, add the website to the same rule and test it.

Warden for iPhone

Set it up without adding unnecessary rules

Daily limits, schedules and focus sessions

Install Warden and connect Screen Time when iOS asks. Then open Rules and tap the plus button.

Choose the apps or scope involved in this particular interruption. Use an allowance for total use, a schedule for recurring hours, or a session for a one-off task.

What Standard, Warden and Lockdown do

Choose Standard when you want to manage the limit yourself. Choose Warden when a person you trust should review early-access requests. Choose Lockdown to keep ordinary early unlocks off until the block ends.

Choose the access mode, then hold the save button to set the rule. Try a short block before using a long one. Emergency access remains separate from ordinary unlock requests.

How Warden approval works

Choose how many minutes you need, add a note and hold to send. If nobody answers within 30 minutes, the request expires and the app stays locked.

An approval applies to the scope and time shown in the app. A declined or unanswered request does not lift the block. Emergency access remains a separate option on your device.

Compare the options

Apple Screen Time

A built-in choice for a daily Instagram limit. Check whether you selected Instagram alone or a group of apps, and who can grant extra time.

Deleting the app

Deleting Instagram removes the installed app, not your account. You can still use the website or reinstall the app, so it may suit a short break rather than a recurring evening limit.

Warden

Warden adds a choice about early access: manage it yourself in Standard, ask a trusted person in Warden mode, or use Lockdown to keep ordinary early unlocks off while the rule is active. Emergency access is separate.

Example: Instagram stays closed from 7 PM to 10 PM

Schedule Instagram for those hours each day. Check messages before the block starts. In Warden mode, a friend can review a request for a specific conversation without opening access for the whole evening.

Keep legitimate messages in the plan.

If you need a conversation during a blocked period, choose a narrow window or agree on a bounded exception. The app's account and messages are not deleted by a restriction.

Check whether you also use Instagram in a browser. A selected app and a selected website are different scopes; do not assume an app block automatically covers every route.

Common questions

Can I block only Reels with an app rule?
No. Warden’s app rule blocks Instagram as a whole, including Reels and messages. It cannot leave direct messages open while blocking only Reels.
Can I keep Instagram installed?
Yes. An access restriction is separate from uninstalling the app or deleting your Instagram account.
Can my friend approve extra Instagram time?
Yes, with a connected Warden and a rule set to Warden mode. Your friend can approve or decline the request. No reply does not count as approval. Emergency access is separate.
Can I block instagram.com as well as the app?
Yes, in a rule that lets you choose websites. Select instagram.com alongside the app, then test it in Safari. Selecting the Instagram app alone does not block the website.
How do I block Instagram at certain times on iPhone?
Use a schedule. In Warden, open Rules, tap the plus button, choose Custom schedule, set the start and end times and select Instagram. In Screen Time on iOS 27, a Screen Time Schedule controls which categories are available in each time window.
Can I set a time limit for Instagram only?
In Warden, yes: each app has its own daily limit. Apple’s iOS 27 guide describes Time Allowances by category, so a Screen Time allowance for Social Media also counts time in other social apps.
